An operative resection specimen from a 45 year old woman who complained of menorrhagia and dysmenorrhoea. She was a widow who had had no pregnancies. Her periods had previously been normal until four months previously when she started having pain in the left iliac fossa at the time of her periods which also became unduly heavy and prolonged. Pelvic examination revealed a bulky uterus and a firm tender fixed mass above the left fornix. A diagnosis of endometriosis was made. At laparotomy a mass was present in the left broad ligament which when dissected out was seen to be a"tarry cyst". The patient made an uneventful recovery.
