Gynaecological pathology: Ovary: Serous papillary carcinoma of the ovary

(a) A 1905 operative resection specimen from a 30 year old woman admitted for a tumour in the abdomen. She had noted the swelling five months before admission. There was no pain or tenderness and menstruation was unaffected. On admission a well-defined cystic tumour could be felt extending to an inch above the umbilicus. The cyst was removed by abdominal section. (b) An operative resection specimen from a 43 year old woman admitted for pain in the back, dyspareunia and frequency of micturition of three years duration. Bimanual examination disclosed a tender, fixed mass to the right of and behind the uterus. At laparotomy a cystic mass was found arising from the left ovary which was removed.
