A 1954 operative resection specimen from a 51 year old woman who had suffered from attacks of severe upper abdominal pain radiating to the back, associated with vomiting for five years. The attacks became more frequent and severe and calcification of the pancreas was apparent on radiography. At laparotomy in May 1954 the ampulla of Vater was exposed and the terminations of the common bile duct and the pancreatic duct were incised and dilated. One month later the attacks of pain returned. In July 1954 pancreatico-duodenectomywas carried out with extreme difficulty and the patient died shortly afterwards.
