A 1935 operative resection specimen from a50 year old insurance clerk, ill for three months with dysphagia, flatulence and hiccough before he sought medical attention. Oesophagoscopy showed a carcinoma at the level of the cardiac sphincter. After a preliminary gastrostomy excision was performed, but death took place from bronchopneumonia two days later.
