Vascular Pathology: Aneurysm: A false aneurysm of the external iliac artery

A 1981 autopsy specimen from a 52 year old man who had suffered from chronic renal failure of unknown aetiology for many years. He was treated with renal transplantation and, later, peritoneal dialysis. His final admission was for staphylococcal septicaemia and peritonitis, from which he succumbed. The specimen shows a spherical mass, which on its cut face is seen to be filled with lamellated thrombus. This mass communicates with the external Iliac artery via a defect which has arisen at the site of past surgical trauma presumably occurring during transplantation.
