Cardiac Pathology: Rheumatic heart disease: Aortic stenosis

An autopsy specimen from a 56 year old clerk, who had had a typical attack of rheumatic fever, with joint pains, effusions and subsequent cardiac murmurs, at the age of 48. He had worked as a clerk since the age of twenty and had never had any such condition before. Systolic and diastolic murmurs were present over both mitral and aortic areas and his capacity for even quite moderate exercise decreased steadily. He collapsed in an LNER waiting room, after watching a football match and was found dead with his head lying against the waiting room fire.
