Perforation of the right ventricle by a caval umbrella filter

A 1983 autopsy specimen from a patient who suffered recurrent pulmonary emboli from deep vein thrombosis in the legs and iliac veins. A filter device was inserted percutaneously into the IVC. An embolus may be seen in the specimen trapped in the filter device. The hooks on the device are supposed to catch in the IVC wall but proximal migration still occurs occasionally.
