Neuropathology: Fungal Cerebral Abscess

A 1964 autopsy specimen from a 61 year old man who developed severe headaches in 1962 which became progressively more severe. He had papilloedema, diplopia, a long standing peri-orbital oedema and a provisional diagnosis of a left cerebral abscess was made. The C.S.F. was found to contain Cryptococcus neoformans. Amphotericin B was administered by intravvenous infusion. Eighteen months later he was noted to have signs of a space occupying lesion on the right, thought to be in the region of the thalamus, and basal ganglia. He died three months later.
