A 1938 autopsy specimen from a seventeen month old child who had been drowsy, drawing up his legs and occasionally vomiting for one week. On admission he was wasted, staring vacantly, with neck rigidity and a positive Kernig's sign, pupils fixed and dilated. X-ray of the chest showed fine mottling. Lumbar puncture was attempted but only two drops obtained. Cheyne Stokes breathing supervened and he died in coma after an illness of eight days' duration. The mother was known to have open pulmonary tuberculosis and thechild had been in hospital for "bronchitis" three weeks previously.
