An operative resection specimen from a 22 year old man, admitted with severe bloody diarrhoea ten days duration. He had had a previous episode six months before. After admission his condition deteriorated rapidly and an emergency total colectomy was carried out. His post operative recovery was complicated by a large abdominal abscess, which gave rise to a secondary haemorrhage. This required a second operation from which he ultimately died.
