A 1997 autopsy specimen from a 28 year old man who was known to be HIV-ve in October 1996. He presented in May 1997 with shortness of breath and chest pain, an HIV test was positive. It was presumed that he had pneumocystis pneumonia, he was treated and recovered. Two weeks later he was readmitted with haemoptysis and shortness of breath. No positive diagnosis was made on lung biopsy and despite all empirical cheomotherapy he died one month later. The total duration of his HIV disease was a maximum of 8 months, which is unusually short.
