Infectious Disease: Respiratory: Lung: Influenzal pneumonia

A 1938 autopsy specimen, comprising a portion of right lung, from a man aged 22 who died from influenzal bronchopneumonia after an illness of three days. There is necrosis of the bronchial mucosa with the formation of a greyish membrane, together with extensive haemorrhagic consolidation of the lung parenchyma. The cut surface of the lung also shows numerous greyish white foci of bronchopneumonic consolidation, some of which have merged together to form small abscesses zoned by haemorrhage.
