A 1942 autopsy specimen from a 53 year old man, admitted with a right sided bronchopneumonia which had failed to respond to antibiotics. Chest X-ray showed a mass at the right hilum, probably a carcinoma. His condition deteriorated rapidly, he developed SVC obstruction and heart failure. No tissue diagnosis was obtained because of his poor clinical condition. He died one month after admission. Autopsy examination showed a tumour arising in right upper lobe bronchus with extensive spread into the neck and the pericardium. Metastases were present in the liver. Microscopy showed an oat cell carcinoma.
