Gastrointestinal Pathology: Colon: Ulcerative Colitis

A 1964 operative resection specimen from a 46 year old woman. In 1951 ulcerative colitis was diagnosed and subsequent conservative treatment included three hospital admissions until 1957 when she was admitted to Guy's with severe bloody diarrhoea and weight loss. A left hemicolectomy was performed with preservation of the rectal stump. She remained well until July 1964 when bloody diarrhoea began from her colostomy and she subsequently began to lose weight and experienced pain and swelling of the left knee and elbow. At operation, in December 1964, a right hemicolectomy was performed from which she recovered well.
