A 1962 operative resection specimen from a 57 year old lady who had developed bloody diarrhoea some twenty years previously. She was treated medically for ulcerative colitis. In 1950 an ileostomy was performed, but the colon was not touched. Ten years later she was re-investigated at Guy's with a view to ileo-rectal anastomosis. However she was found to have a benign rectal stricture at 7 cm and a "microcolon" which contra-indicated operation. In September 1962 she passed blood p.r and a total proctocolectomy was performed.
