Gastrointestinal pathology: Small intestine: Endocrine cell tumour (carcinoid)

An operative resection specimen from a 22 year old woman who had a three month history of epigastric pain, stabbing in character, made worse by eating. Shortly after the onset of symptoms she developed distension of the abdomen with vomiting after meals. On examination she had a distended abdomen with obstructive bowel sounds. Erect plain x-ray showed multiple small bowel fluid levels. At operation resection of a white plum sized tumour was carried out. Post operative recovery was uneventful.
